|This iconic Art Deco building is one of Manchester's best loved music venues. I assisted in rejuvenating the entrance and circulation spaces in April 2010; the brief was to inject some of its Art Deco heritage back into the space whilst incorporating some element of the branding of the Apollo's sponsors O2. The blues so reminiscent of the
Art Deco era tied in well with O2's blue palette and the metallic gold detailing was returned to its silver original glory. A chainmail lighting feature was incorporated in the main entrance foyer directly above a specially woven design in the carpet, both of which I designed based on both Art Deco styling and the O2 graphically linear logo. The features add a central focal point to the asymmetrical foyer. The carpet design then continues upstairs in the main walkway to add structure to the area and to mirror the existing coffer above.
The bar area was revitalised using a lighter, fresher colour palette - again in keeping with the building's deco heritage - and the mirror features suspended at an angle above the bar allow visitors to enjoy the action and crowd around them. The white counter top and vinyl floor and the coloured lighting to the columns add an electric neon type feel to the evening’s events, whilst highlighting the incredible original features such as the very detailed decoration around the column heads, which take centre stage.
